Shediac is popularly known as the "Lobster Capital of the World" and home to a rich Acadian culture. The world's largest lobster sculpture is located at the entrance to the town. To promote its ties to lobster fishing, it hosts an international lobster festival.
Shediac's proximity to the Moncton Airport, together with its small town ambiance, makes it an attractive location for knowledge economy businesses. It its an important railway-to-ship trans-shipment centre and is well known as a fishing port and seafood processing centre.
It is to be noted that Shediac is located approx. 15 minutes away from Moncton and many Moncton residents have cottages near Shediac's Parlee Beach.
